I really enjoy working as a dental hygienist at Harris & Hoyle dental practice. lt has such a lovely working atmosphere with a great team ethos.  Every memberof staff is made to feel they have a very important role. Here is a brief history of my career pathway and what motivates me to be the best I can be.

After qualifying as a Dental Nurse in 1983 I gained a place at Manchester university Dental Hospital to train as a Dental Hygienisit in 1984.  I was proud to be awarded the tutors prize.  During my time in my first practice I heard about two very young and dynamic dentists Anthony Hoyle and John Cottingham moving in to the area and looking for a dental hygienist.  It was the kind of practice I only dreamed of, a modern, forward thinking practice with up to date equipment and materials.  The whole practice was designed with bright primary colours comfortable sofas and staff in flying suits! 23 years on I am still there although the flying suits have gone, thankfully!  Over the years the team have worked hard to build a great family practice with the main emphasis on preventing dental decay and gum problems, an area that I am passionate about.

Dentistry is changing at a rapid pace and we have had to continually update our skills, equipment and materials.  Looking back I would say the most stressful time was when we went computerised.  Updating my skills has involved going back to university to train in a local and block analgesia, taking impressions recementing temporary crowns and temporary dressing.  I am currently undergoing a course in Dental Radiography and Radiology at Hull University.  I have been actively involved in my hygienist regional group and represented them at national level which was really interesting.  Getting involved in health promotion is an area I really enjoy i.e. No Smoking Day, Oral Health Month, Oral Cancer awareness etc. and giving talks to various groups.

I do however enjoy my life outside of dentistry; running, walking, gym, gardening and socialising as often as possible.  I have managed two London Marathons, the Great North Run and many half marathons raising money for electric toothbrushes for adults with special needs and the last marathon for the charity Mind.  Walking the three peaks was a challenge and I hope to do more walking in the future.

I really enjoy my work it is fulfilling, rewarding and fun.  I have a list of lovely patients who I know floss & spiral daily!  I never give up on anyone and aim for a beautiful healthy smiles for all ages.  Harris and Hoyle have allowed me the opportunity to give my patients the time, the best equipment and individual care they deserve. What a great job!
