I was born in Kent and spent my formative years in Liverpool. After deciding to enter dentistry, considering it to be the profession that offered diversity with a practical leaning, I qualified in 1976 and immediately undertook six months further training in oral surgery at St George's Hospital and the Royal Dental Hospital.
I then moved to Newark where I worked for eight years as a general dental practitioner, gaining experience before taking over the late Alan Dyas' practice with John Cottingham in 1984.
Since then I have been devoted to developing a family practice committed to continuation ofcare where each visit is considered a part of on-going-care rather than 'one-off item of treatment'.
Treatment is thought of in relation to the patient as a whole rather than a stand-alone piece of work.
Being an ardent advocate ofcontinuing professional development I attend regular updates of the latest techniques and materials, enabling me to provide the highest level of all-round dental care. This is enhanced by a carefully chosen team of administrators, receptionists, dental nurses (all of whom are qualified or are studying for qualifications on recognised courses), hygienists and therapists, whose attitude to treatment modalities is the same.
A while ago I attended a course, over two years, on advanced restorative techniques. The restoration of teeth retaining as much of the original tooth structure as possible remains a great interest to me, as does the modem
concept of 'minimally invasive dentistry', which is a more recent extrapolation of the same philosophy.
I believe that treatment should be effected in as relaxed conditions as possible and to this end, whilst exercising a professional demeanour,I tend to adopt an informal approach with my chairside manner.
Often more than one avenue of dental treatment is offered, even when there is obviously only one sensible one, but the patient always has the right to choose.
To sum up, a wide range of up-to-date treatment effected in a relaxed and professional fashion.
